One food added five to the displayed length
In our recorded Easy-mode session, eating food changed the displayed length from 1 to 6. This matches the local game’s growth increment of five segments. Do not import the “one food equals one extra square” assumption from another Snake game.
The practical consequence is a larger body to accommodate after each collection. A corridor that looked roomy before eating may be difficult to leave once the longer body follows the head.
Why the tail is not an instant escape route
A visible tail position is a snapshot, not a promise about the next move. Growth changes the body you have to route around. A plan that depends on one occupied square becoming free at the exact moment you enter it has little tolerance for timing errors.
When learning, choose a route with clear space already available. Following the general direction of the tail can sometimes help maintain a broad loop, but this article does not establish a guaranteed tail-following algorithm for every mode or growth state.
Recognize a pocket before entering it
Imagine your body forming a U shape around food. If the opening is narrow, entering can close the opening behind the head. Before collecting, trace whether you can exit through a different clear lane or whether your own following body will occupy it.
Prefer broad connected areas over a series of small pockets. A broad loop lets you see upcoming turns; repeated tight turns consume space and make future crossings harder to judge. This is a route-planning habit, not a mathematical guarantee of filling the board.
Check the board immediately after each collection
- Notice the new length and where the body now extends.
- Locate the largest connected clear area.
- Check the next food’s entry and exit before moving toward it.
- Leave extra room near boundaries rather than planning an immediate reversal.
