About 2048
2048 is a number puzzle played on a four-by-four board. Every move slides all tiles in one direction. When two equal tiles meet, they combine into one tile worth twice as much. A new tile then appears, so even a move that creates space changes the next decision. The goal is to build a 2048 tile before the board runs out of valid moves. You can keep playing after reaching it.
Getting started
- Press an arrow key or swipe across the board to slide all tiles.
- Bring equal numbers together: 2 + 2 makes 4, then 8, 16, and beyond.
- Keep merging until you reach 2048. Use New Game to start over.
Tips for a better run
- Choose a corner for your largest tile and try to keep it there. This makes the rest of the board easier to organize.
- Build a row or column of descending values beside your largest tile. Avoid splitting your small tiles across opposite sides.
- Before moving, look at what the whole board will do. A useful merge can still leave you with no room for the next tile.
From a recorded play session
A downward move merged two 2 tiles into a 4. The score rose from 24 to 28, and the new 4 stayed above the existing 4.
